SJI mourns the loss of alum

Photo of Juan

Juan Rodriguez, a member of the Sports Journalism Institute’s Class of 1994, lost his battle with brain cancer on Jan. 18. His work, and his friendship, will remain in the hearts of his SJI brothers and sisters. He leaves behind a wife, Tiffany Rodriguez, and two children, Laura, 14, and Ryan, 12.

“Juan was a fine journalist and a quiet gentleman,” said Gregory Lee, who was Juan’s SJI classmate and worked as his sports editor at the Sun Sentinel from 2012-2015.

“When Juan fell ill in 2012, the Sun Sentinel family rallied to his family’s aid," Lee said." His wife, Tiffany, was a rock throughout. I will miss my SJI brother.”

Rodriguez, who covered the Marlins for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, had shared the story of his fight with cancer with readers on the paper’s Miami Marlins blog.
